What was originally planned for a championship Saturday at Park school had to be rescheduled to a neutral site on Monday, February 23rd. Greater Grace and Mt. Airy came into the finals after winning hard fought battles in the semi’s (GGCA over MSD 58-52 and Mt. Airy over CHEN 71-63).
Neither team could have anticipated that the first quarter would take nearly an hour to complete, and the game would go on to be played, thanks in large part to to New Life’s AD Darren Borg who successfully stopped the roof leak which threatened to cancel this championship game for the second time.
Mt. Airy jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first 4 minutes, but after the long interruption, it was Greater Grace that went on a 12-0 run to end the quarter. GG continued their run to end the half at 34-20.
Mt. Airy made runs in the 2nd half to pull within six led by senior Bailey Finch who finished the game with 24 points. The final score 70-60. GGCA was led by the all tournament MVP junior point guard Alvin Lewis (26 points), freshman Sam Phillips (18 points), and junior Zane Turk (14 points and 9 rebounds).
The All Tournament Team includes: Alvin Lewis, Sam Phillips, and Zane Turk from Greater Grace, Bailey Finch and Emmitt Miller from Mt. Airy and Yave Sanchez from Maryland School for the Deaf, and Joseph Chase from CHEN.
