MSD Wins MS Volleyball Title

December 3, 2015 by Matt Brethauer

This team strikes you alike every other team out there in beginning of any season of any sport. Approaching our first game of the season, we had few stumbles here and there in terms of not having found the right ember of confidence or positive attitude to light up, yet. After those stumbled moments, we knew that we had to establish team goals and one of which is a team motto that reflects the girls’ beyond imaginable effort and spirit, “All out, all game, all season.” Because of the consistent support each member had for each other and the energizing fire of spirit from the
players on the bench, winning the championship title was certainly inevitable for this special group of young girls. It was completely earned not given. With that having been said, to state how proud we are of this team is beyond measurable.
Coach Michele & Coach Amelia

We couldn’t be more proud of our girls’s efforts as they showed confidence, determination, and had fun playing. Winning the MIAC championship is a tremendous accomplishment!

On Friday October 3rd, Mount Airy Christian Academy competed against reigning champions Greater Grace Christian Academy for the MIAC postseason championship. On a frigid night at Cedar Lane Regional Park, both teams found it hard to create opportunities against each other’s defenses. With no goals scored before half time, the teams came back out for the second half, ready for that one opportunity to give their team the win. That moment came midway through the second half as Lions striker Judge Russell chased down a ball on the left wing and placed a shot over the opposing goalkeeper. Goal Mt. Airy! With about 20 minutes left to play, the Lions held firm on defense and shut it down until the final whistle blew. Final score—Mt. Airy Christian Academy-1, Greater Grace Christian Academy -0. Congratulations to both teams on a well-played match, and congratulations to the Lions on their first ever MIAC championship!

Greater Grace Wins MIAC Varsity Boys Basketball Championship

March 25, 2015 by Matt Brethauer

What was originally planned for a championship Saturday at Park school had to be rescheduled to a neutral site on Monday, February 23rd.  Greater Grace and Mt. Airy came into the finals after winning hard fought battles in the semi’s (GGCA over MSD 58-52 and Mt. Airy over CHEN 71-63).
Neither team could have anticipated that the first quarter would take nearly an hour to complete, and the game would go on to be played, thanks in large part to to New Life’s AD Darren Borg who successfully stopped the roof leak which threatened to cancel this championship game for the second time.
Mt. Airy jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first 4 minutes, but after the long interruption, it was Greater Grace that went on a 12-0 run to end the quarter. GG continued their run to end the half at 34-20.
Mt. Airy made runs in the 2nd half to pull within six led by senior Bailey Finch who finished the game with 24 points.  The final score 70-60.  GGCA was led by the all tournament MVP junior point guard Alvin Lewis (26 points), freshman Sam Phillips (18 points), and junior Zane Turk (14 points and 9 rebounds).
The All Tournament Team includes:  Alvin Lewis, Sam Phillips, and Zane Turk from Greater Grace, Bailey Finch and Emmitt Miller from Mt. Airy and Yave Sanchez from Maryland School for the Deaf, and Joseph Chase from CHEN.

This year’s MIAC varsity boys’ soccer final was the first ever, yet it was a rematch for the two finalists:  in last year’s MCAL finals, the Rockbridge Academy Scots defeated the Greater Grace Eagles 1-0.  This year after splitting in the regular season (3-1 GG victory and 3-2 OT Rockbridge victory), Greater Grace came out on top in Friday’s MIAC championship.
The fans packed the bleachers at the new turf field at Ballenger Creek Park in Frederick on Fridaynight.  After a hard-fought first half the Scots led 1-0 after James Mackes scored a beautiful goal off an assist from Nifemi Taiwo 15 minutes into the game).  Greater Grace’s Emmanuel Pankey answered on a through ball from Zane Turk in the first minute of the second half.  With 15 minutes left in the game, Zane Turk scored his 17th goal of the season from 22 yards out to win the game for the Eagles.
The All-Tournament Team included the following Rockbridge players:  Andrew Burkhardt (goalie), Jay Wallen, Eben Mitchell and James Mackes.  Greater Grace’s players included: Zane Turk, Dan Veader, Ryan Heidenreich, and Nick Plunkett.  The Tournament MVP was Greater Grace defender, Alvin Lewis.
